Riverside's Swan River setting and proximity to the CBD are its major assets. The project will activate and enhance the riverine environment through landscape and waterfront rehabilitation including boardwalks, jetties and sensitive tourist and residential development.

The development of residential neighbourhoods around existing infrastructure allows more efficient use of resources. Use of private motor vehicles will be reduced and public transport supported. In broad environmental terms, inner-city development is preferable to suburban sprawl, as it delivers a better use of resources and infrastructure.

Streetscapes will be 'green' spaces, with pedestrian and cycle links as a feature. The proposal also seeks to strengthen links between Perth City and the Riverside precinct as well as maximising views and access to the river.

The main objectives of the landscape and recreation plans will be to create a variety of environmental landscape types at the river's edge, including the riverine habitat, and provide a diverse range of recreation and user experiences.

Landscaping will emphasise pedestrian and cycle usage with linkages throughout the precinct and a focus on native plant species.

The Masterplan captures the advantages of the precinct's unique setting, notably the steep eastern-facing escarpment and the river's edge. It also reflects the area's existing heritage, cultural sites and recreational facilities.

The proposal envisages a diverse range of open spaces and parks, from the ornamental beauty of Queen’s Gardens to beaches and woodlands by the river.

The proposal also seeks to strengthen links between Perth City and the Riverside precinct as well as maximising views and access to the river.
