Environment and Landscape
Featured Landscapes
Within Riverside there will be defined landscape areas including the following:
New Civic Square
The proposed Gloucester Circus is designed to be a vibrant community meeting place, with cafés, performance areas, exhibition space and opportunities for markets. The famous Gates and historic Totaliser building will be preserved.
Northern Inlet
Conceptually, an inlet at the northern end of the redevelopment area will provide a relaxed and informal setting, ideal for activities like picnics. It will include a beach and a waterfront promenade. A riverside habitat will help protect and define the area. The WA Trotting Association is the owner of most of this area.
Southern Inlet
The southern inlet near the Causeway will be a regional waterfront attraction, linking the City to the river. It will have an urban character, with a range of residential, entertainment, education and commercial activities.
River area
The river's edge will continue to provide parkland for recreation and leisure activities. Existing paperbark trees and reed-beds will be enhanced by new riverine habitat to be created near the Causeway.
Hillside Plazas
The steep escarpment near Waterloo Crescent creates an exciting opportunity to establish terraced gardens with ramps and stairs. This area offers stunning views over the Riverside precinct and towards the Swan River and the Darling Range.

Queen’s Gardens
Queen's Gardens is undoubtedly a gem within the Riverside crown. The Gardens will be linked with surrounding residential and commercial areas through enhanced street design, traffic calming and new walkways.
New roadway
A new roadway passing between the WACA and Trinity College will retain the existing trees that line the current boundaries. The new street extends north to the river, providing access for local traffic.
